Spotify is allowing developers to embed its music player directly into apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with today's release of its libspotify 9 API for iOS.

The catch: only developers with Spotify Premium accounts can apply for an application. Developers can download the API here.

"We hope this will enable a new category of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch applications with Spotify inside and allow for more immersive music experiences within iOS apps," Director of Platform Sten Garmark writes on the Spotify developer blog.

Spotify users, however, hope this means an iPad app is coming soon.

"Awesome, this is exactly what Spotify needs to boost platform adoption," Spotify user qralex commented on the post. "...Not to echo all previous sentiments, but...iPad app, pretty please with a cherry on top? :)"

In July, London-based Spotify launched its U.S. service following months of anticipation. The company, which has more than 15M tracks and claims over 10M registered users, closed a $100M round in June that valued it at $1B. Investors include Kleiner Perkins, Accel, DST Global and Napster co-founder Sean Parker.

Founded in 2006, Spotify opened its API to developers in 2009. In April 2010, Spotify released libspotify 0.0.4, which added support for OS X and Windows.

Sites that currently use Spotify's API include ShareMyPlaylists.com, which enables users to integrate Spotify playlists on their accounts, and U.K.-based Digster, which lets users listen to Spotify-hosted music on the site.
