Exclusive: Jason Sosa on "Stealing" $2K from His Own Startup (or the Dangers of Reality TV)

[ Jason Sosa, Immersive founder and CEO, says his team and investors were well aware of his intentions to use $2K of the team's money to support his family. ]We all know reality TV includes set ups and clever editing. But on Bloomberg's "TechStars" reality show last week, Jason Sosa, CEO of interactive billboard startup Immersive, admits to embezzling more than $2K from his company -- an event Sosa tells LAUNCH was liberally edited to show his guilt for viewer entertainment [ Watch it here at 12:50 ].

Sosa says via email that he not only didn't steal the money from the company -- which came from a pot that included TechStars and private-investor funds -- but that his then-teammates and investor knew he was going to use the money to cover a personal financial crisis.

Track your Google+ Data Now That ThinkUp Supports Google+


ThinkUp founder Gina Trapani began tinkering with the Google+ API as soon as it was released in September. Now her team has added support for Google+ so that ThinkUp users can store data from their Google+ -- as well as other social network accounts -- into a searchable database.

The Google+ integration collects your last 25 G+ posts, including images, links and the number of replies or +1s each received. You can view this data in a chart and spreadsheet to analyze the impact of individual posts.

ThinkUp has also updated its Facebook plug-in to include all of your Facebook posts, not just the ones you have made since installing ThinkUp. You can also export tweets and other posts...

Awesome iPhone/Android App for Occupy Wall Street Activists



GO -- an event-based video-sharing app that's perfect for activists trying to create buzz or flash mobs around protests and other events as they happen -- is about to launch its beta mobile app for iPhone and Android.

GO provides a geo-tagged broadcasting service so that outsiders can peek in on events as they happen and as GO users upload them. That makes it an interesting tool for #OccupyWallStreet protests still taking place in New York City and organized events in other cities. The GO app is not yet available in the App Store or Android Market.

Users upstreaming video content will remain anonymous, making GO even more attractive for sharing political demonstrations or possibly even criminal activities...

Awesome and Scary Smartphone-powered Robot/Attack Drone on Kickstarter for $78

For a $78 pledge on Kickstarter, Romotive will provide backers with their very own smartphone-controlled robot, called Romo, that lets you see where it's going by using the phone's camera. You can control Romo--  the same size as a small remote-controlled car -- with a computer, iPod touch, tablet or another smartphone as long as you have a wifi connection.

Romo allows owners to use a variety of Android or iOS apps to make their robots do fun stuff like spy on co-workers and draw pictures [ check this out ].

When we saw this we thought, "This is awesome, a smartphone-controlled robot!" followed immediately by, "My god, we hope terrorists don't get their hands on this..."

LinkedIn Puts Company Updates on User Homepages -- Four Years after Facebook


LinkedIn members now see updates from companies they follow -- including job opportunities, employee moves and breaking news -- when they sign on to the professional networking service.

The updates are limited to 500 characters. LinkedIn says "tens of millions of professionals" have followed more than 2M company profiles since the feature was added in April 2010.

In contrast, Facebook's Pages let companies post up to 5K characters, and businesses have been able to post updates that appear in follower's news feeds since Pages launched in November 2007...

Forget Pagers, NoWait Texts You When Your Table is Ready



WHAT: An iPad app for casual-dining restaurants to manage seating. Restaurant hosts or hostesses put the customer's phone number in the app and notify the guest via text message when a table is available.

Customers are free to leave the restaurant until they are notified, at which point they can cancel their table or tell the restaurant (also by text message) they will be there soon.

Restaurants can also use the system to send thank-you messages to the guest and invite them to join reward-type programs by texting a response. The restaurant does not retain customer phone numbers unless customers opt-in to their programs. Restaurants can connect multiple devices to the platform, including their iPhones.

Harvard Study Says Yelp Increases Revenue for Independent Restaurants



Yelp reviews drive customers to independent restaurants over chains, according to a study conducted by a Harvard Business School professor.

"There is a shift in revenue share toward independent restaurants and away from chains as Yelp penetrates a market," Michael Luca, assistant professor at the Harvard Business School, writes in the study.

The study, "Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue: The Case of Yelp.com", analyzed information collected by the Washington State Department of Revenue for all restaurants in Seattle between 2003 and 2009...

Good News for Startups Down Under: Innovyz Start Joins the TechStars Network



Already partnered with 30 startup accelerators worldwide, the TechStars Network has added its first program in Australia, Innovyz Start.

Innovyz Start is a four-month program operated by SME Growth Capital, which is rebranding itself as Innovyz. The program will launch in March 2012 and expects to begin accepting applications in November, StartupSmart reported.

Like its TechStars counterparts in the U.S., SME will offer $18K in funding to the initial 10 startups but may look to increase that amount as it gathers potential investors...

Sincerely CEO: 'Tomorrow Tim Cook Won't Be Thinking About Making It Easier to Send Photo Cards by Mail'



Greeting card and postcard services may suffer from the upcoming launch of Apple's new Cards app, which will let users send postcards by mail from their own photo catalogues, following the announcement of the iPhone 4S at the "Let's Talk iPhone" event in Cupertino, CA.

Scott Forstall, Apple SVP of iOS software, announced the release of the Cards app this morning at Apple's Infinite Loop campus [ Watch the video here ].

The Cards app lets users create custom physical cards from their photos that are printed on high-quality paper, and can be delivered anywhere in the U.S. for $2.99 and anywhere in the world for $4.99. The United States Postal Service will confirm the delivery of the cards through text message.

But will Apple's entry into this space be the death of companies in the greeting card space?...
