Turntable.fm Co-founder Is Flattered by Facebook's "Listen With" Feature

Facebook is rolling out a potential Turntable.fm killer, the "Listen With" feature, where friends can listen to music with you in real time.

"I'm flattered Facebook was inspired by turntable.fm and created a listen together feature," Turntable.fm co-founder Billy Chasen tells LAUNCH via email. "I look forward to seeing how they interpret what social music means as we seem to have different core philosophies about it (such as the importance of discovering new music from strangers and not just friends)."

Now, anytime a friend is listening to music via services like Spotify, MOG and Rdio, you will have an option to listen with them and chat about the songs, as long as that person has enabled sharing listening activity.

Turntable.fm launched to the limited public in May 2011 and has grown to having 400K+ monthly active users, while Facebook has 800M active users. A key differentiators between the two is that Turntable.fm allows up to 200 people (not just friends) in a room at the same time, while Facebook allows up to 50 friends.

While it's still too early to tell how successful the "Listen With" feature will be, until we start to see Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa listening to tracks with fans -- as they do on Turntable.fm -- only then would it be safe to say that the feature is a Turntable.fm "killer." Also, Turntable.fm has noteworthy support from big players in the music industry like Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

"But now, even more minor celebrities are coming on to turntable.fm, Steve Aoki, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West," the Turntable.fm blog recently stated. "But don’t get too excited, Kanye and Gaga aren’t actually starting a turntable.fm account, they’re only buying a stake in the company, but, at least its progress."

In November, Facebook released some stats touting the success of the Open Graph music applications launched at f8, most notably Spotify. Since launching on Facebook, Spotify's monthly active users increased by 3.98M to reach 7.4M.

With Facebook's "Listen With" feature, it will be interesting to see if Soundrop, a genre-based chat room app on Spotify, will take a hit in activity. But as GigaOm reports, the data on the Spotify app platform, which the company introduced in late November, is promising. Since Dec. 20, Soundrop has seen a total of 265,590 unique visitors with nearly 32,700 tracks added and 2.4M played.
