Tumblr Rolling Out Fan Mail for Private Messaging

Tumblr is starting to roll out a new private messaging option for users, Fan Mail, the blogging platform company announced today.

“I’m very pleased to introduce Fan Mail, a beautiful new way to share those sweet, inspiring, or otherwise thoughtful notes with your favorite bloggers,” Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp wrote in a Fan Mail-themed note.

You'll soon be able to send unlimited messages to your favorite bloggers via the inbox, drop-down avatar menus and the top of the corner of the blogs you follow.

"Frankly, it seems like an interesting spin on user comments that could allow for a more personal and productive interaction between the consumer and creator," Matthew Panzarino of The Next Web writes. "This kind of messaging could allow for an echo-free environment that encourages users to be more human about the way that they talk to the owner of the blog."

Tumblr currently has 39M+ blogs on the platform, with a combined total of 15B posts. Tumblr has raised $125M in funding to date from investors including Sequoia Capital, Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital.
