AOL Editions

Editions delivers a personalized daily magazine to your iPad that feels delightfully like an old-school print publication, with a "cover" and a table of contents. Interestingly, the articles come from a long list of publishers -- not just AOL's own properties -- and cover 15 topics from family to health to technology. In 2005, Google invested $1B in AOL for 5% of the company; AOL's market cap is currently about $1.4B.

Bing

Let's face it, mobile web browsers are not aesthetically pleasing -- but Bing for iPad beautifully displays weather, news, maps and movie listings. The main screen features full-size images from the Bing homepage, and the news tab displays a grid view of text and images.  Microsoft, which launched Bing in May 2009 and the iPad version in April 2011, has 14.7% of the search market and a current market cap of about $220B.

ConditionOne

ConditionOne's iPad platform allows visual storytellers to immerse you in the scene you're watching. For example, a demo video takes you to the front lines of Libya's revolution so you can ride in the back of a pickup with guns ablaze and take cover with rebels. ConditionOne CEO Danfung Dennis, director of the award-winning documentary "Hell and Back Again," was inspired to change filmmaking after covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Drchrono

Electronic health records -- and doctors' productivity -- got a much-needed boost with the iPad. Physicians using Drchrono can kiss traditional paper forms goodbye because the app lets them do everything from getting patients registered to tracking their visits to sending paperless bills and e-prescribing medications (and having them sent straight to the pharmacy). In 2011, Drchrono raised $1.33M in seed funding from investors including Y Combinator, General Catalyst Partners and 500 Startups.

Kno

We love the idea of replacing expensive and oftentimes quickly outdated textbooks with e-books for tablets. Kno's iPad versions of 100K textbooks cost 30% to 50% less than their paper counterparts -- and give students new ways to experience learning with social sharing, smart links and even diagrams that turn into multiple-choice quizzes. The Santa Clara-based startup, which initially planned to make its own tablets, recently raised $30M on top of $46M raised in 2010.

MoPix

Filmmakers need traditional distribution channels less and less, and we're thrilled that MoPix lets them turn their work into gorgeous (paid) iPad apps. The first film released on MoPix is, appropriately, "Transcendent Man," a documentary about legendary futurist Ray Kurzweil that includes typical DVD bonuses like the trailer, extras and photos, all for $9.99. MoPix is bootstrapped but recently received $18K through the Portland Incubator Experiment backed by Wieden + Kennedy.

NoWait

Restaurants that don't accept reservations surely have better wait-list options than pen and paper or clunky pagers, right? That's why we're excited about NoWait, an app that lets restaurants manage their seating from an iPad, texting you when your table is ready and even offering those who opt-in loyalty perks. NoWait raised $300K in seed funding and plans on raising a Series A of $1.5M.

Showyou

How cool would it be to have a Flipboard-type app for video? Well, the guys at Remixation used the underlying technology from their video collecting-and-sharing site Vodpod (recently sold to Lockerz) to make the Showyou app, which displays all the videos your friends are sharing as well as 2D "grids" of videos from "The Daily Show," TED and more. TripLingo

Chances are you won't learn how to say just the right thing in another language -- and avoid looking like an idiot tourist -- from an old-fashioned phrase book. TripLingo teaches you Spanish, French, Italian, and other languages with a customized phrase list, a "slang slider" for saying things formally to colloquially, and flashcards for just $10 an app (take that, Rosetta Stone!). Zite

You want to read what interests you -- but that's not necessarily what's in your social stream. Like Pandora, Zite customizes the articles it delivers in its iPad app based on the interests you give it and how much you enjoyed the articles/publishers it served you from your Twitter, Google Reader, Delicious and Read It Later accounts. We're not surprised CNN acquired the startup in August for a reported $20M-$25M.

Evernote

We love CEO Phil Libin's passion for tablets. Evernote, which lets you save and take note of everything in your life, debuted its iPad app the same day the iPad went on sale in April 2010, and HTC even used Evernote's API to build Evernote directly into Sense, its custom overlay for Android. In July, Evernote raised $50M from Sequoia Capital and Morgenthaler Ventures, then acquired Skitch in August.
